Baltimore, MD Tonight – Funeral for Edgar Allan Poe

TweetIt from HubSpot

"Quoth the raven, Nevermore."

"Quoth the raven, Nevermore."

Tonight, the city my cousin Edgar called home,  Baltimore, MD, will celebrate his 200th Anniversary of his birthday by holding the funeral he never had. Poe’s family, my relatives, his friends, his cousin, Neilson Poe did not release the information to the public that Edgar had died at age 40 in 1849. For that reason, cousin Edgar had modest attendance of about 10 people at a small memorial before his burial. I know I am only a distant cousin, but I feel somewhat responsible and guilty about that and indeed, have seen the tragic patterns of Poe’s life play out through the generations, including early deaths. My dear Grand Aunt Rosie was the last I knew to keep the family tree that has him listed as:

Poe, Edgar Allan: American author.

…though there are proud, rambling paragraphs written about land owners and soldiers. I asked my mother why they had only this to say of him? She looked embarrassed, turned her eyes down to her hands and said that no one wanted to talk about drinking and drugs and the other… They were ashamed. I could scarcely believe my ears and I was very young, just learning in school of Edgar Allan Poe as an author, though my big brother had already read all of his works and tried writing like him.

I asked my mother if she was ashamed of Edgar.

She said, “no, he was very troubled and his own parents didn’t take care of him.”

Really? What do you mean?

They adopted him to “The Allans”, they couldn’t care for him.

Why?

I’m not sure if they were dead or what happened, nobody is, but I think his father was dead and his mother went to England. They were stage actors.

(I wanted to be a stage actor. Gulp.)

There are lots of reasons, dear.

I did not have time to pursue. In keeping with family tradition, there were too many storms at the forefront to look at the aft. Cousin Edgar was a brilliant author. They could have at least injected an adjective besides American. One look at the Chronology of his life will show it is not an easy job to follow the life of the dearly departed Poe.

Baltimore is instead celebrating his birth with the wonderful gift of a proper funeral! The town is abuzz and it’s funny that Boston was supposed to be the warm home of his heart, when clearly it is Baltimore who loves and appreciates him, deserves him. And has all along. Regretfully and stereotypically of our family, I cannot be in attendance. I did have the decency to write, at least, and thank them for the wonderful events they have held and will hold this evening. I assured them that if cousin Edgar could attend, he will. I think he would like that I have conveyed that message. Hopefully, my brother will be able to attend with him. He was his biggest fan and followed in his footsteps to an early grave.

Please be there if you can – why would you miss this if you live nearby?

Anti-Aging – How To Prevent and Get Rid of Under Eye Dark Circles

TweetIt from HubSpot

Make sure your eyes are FABULOUS this Holiday Season!

Make sure your eyes are FABULOUS this Holiday Season!

It’s that time of year again. Time to rush around shopping for all of the holidays! This is exciting and even I can get caught up in it, but there are a couple of things we need to do so we’ll still look great at all the parties!

What causes dark circles under your eyes? Is it from staying up late? Is it from not getting enough sleep? Well, yes, lack of rest can certainly emphasize those shadows under your eyes and even more so, accentuate the puffiness. One of the things that really causes dark circles is consuming a diet or drinks that cycle sugar and salt, sugar and salt. This may be why women tend to have puffy, dark circles during PMS, diet related. Yes, I know…but it’s true.

My response to this logic was that I should eat all sweets or all salt that day. Here’s why that won’t work, yeah, no, it won’t work =( Even something as harmless as chocolate has a great deal of BOTH salt and sugar in it. In fact, most sweets have a very high sodium content. Now, I am realistic and I believe in moderation, that is still the key! But if you begin to see darker than normal circles or puffier than usual eye area, try cutting out something you “know” is slightly evil from your diet. It won’t hurt. I promise =)

Creating your own custom formulations can not only save money, but often is much more effective!

Creating your own custom formulations can not only save money, but often is much more effective!

Topical preparations that contain Haloxyl, Caffeine, Argireline, Cucumber, Alpha Lipoic Acid, DMAE and Hyaluronic Acid (to name a few, all available in Anti-Aging at ModelSupplies) are wonderful for scavenging away the excess fluids from the eye area and doing a general cleanup beneath the skin’s surface. Combine these ingredients with a controlled diet and reasonable sleep and you will be batting your eyelashes well into the future and no matter what day of the month it is! And, by the way, these approaches also work for men!

BOO~!

Are You Eating Your Way to Diabetes?

My mother was a Type II Diabetic and my husband is a Type I Diabetic. They are completely different.  The following article is focused on Type II Diabetes which you have more control in avoiding. So let’s avoid it, shall we?

Testing blood glucose levels is key in keeping Diabetes under control.

Testing blood glucose levels is key in keeping Diabetes under control.

21–30: Beware! You could be at a high risk for diabetes.
Based on your answers, you may be at high risk for developing diabetes in the future. That’s bad news  because this serious illness is quickly becoming one of the leading causes of poor health and premature death around the world. Maybe you haven’t thought too much about the connection between your diet and your diabetes risk, or perhaps you know that your eating habits are harmful but you haven’t taken any steps to improve them. Either way, it’s time to change course if you want to avoid health problems later. The good news is that it’s never too late to start improving your diet — and it may not be as hard as you think. Make an appointment with your doctor or a nutritionist to review your eating habits and to get advice on the dietary changes you can make to improve your health. It’s better to make these changes now in the hope that you can avoid diabetes in the future than to have to make drastic changes to manage the disease later.

Eating fruits and vegetables is key in avoiding Diabetes.

Eating fruits and vegetables is key in avoiding Diabetes.

Remember, you don’t develop diabetes in a vacuum. Your risk is based on the accumulated effects of your health habits, including how well you eat, over the years. So don’t think only in the short term — healthy eating over the long term should be your goal. Imagine yourself 10, 20, or even 30 years from now: How will your current diet affect your health then? To achieve a balanced and healthy eating plan, aim for a diet high in fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy, and whole grains, and stick with foods that are low in saturated and trans fat, total fat, cholesterol, and sodium. If you haven’t already, try to develop a taste for nonanimal protein  sources, such as tofu, beans, veggie burgers, and nuts, and reach for them on occasion in place of meat. Other hints? Whenever possible, choose fresh foods over highly processed or altered ones, and switch to whole-grain cereals and breads if they’re not already a part of your diet. Finally, don’t forget that too much sugar and alcohol can also play a role in the development of diabetes, so consume them in moderation. It’ll be worth it!

silenced

It can be when someone:

  • Puts you down, says mean things, yells, plays mind games
  • Blames you for their behavior
  • Threatens to leave or take the children away from you
  • Isolates you from your friends and family
  • Doesn’t let you have a job, controls money and bank accounts, refuses to pay bills or buy food
  • Takes away phone or car keys
  • Treats you like a servant, makes all decisions, makes you ask permission
  • Watches everything you do, jealous, checks car mileage
  • Hits, chokes, pushes, slaps, holds or ties you down
  • Threatens or does hurt you, the children or the pets
  • Destroys your property
  • Forceful or unwanted sex or sex acts
  • Won’t let you sleep

domesticviolence

Plan ahead for a quick and safer escape

  • Pack extra clothes and personal supplies for you and your children
  • Set aside an extra set of car keys, money and copies of important papers for you and the children: Birth certificates, social security numbers, financial papers, federal tax returns, health documents and insurance policies
  • Leave extra clothes, supplies and papers with someone you trust
  • Try to leave the house everyday at a set time, i.e. get mail, and walk the dog. When you are ready to leave, it won’t look suspicious
  • Plan where you will go, how you will get there. Rehearse your plan.

No one deserves to be hurt. It’s not your fault. Had enough apologies, promises or excuses?

Please re-read 1st paragraph. If any of these things are happening to you, it is your responsibility to your self and your children and pets (if possible) to get you all out safe and sound whether you are male or female, no matter what your relationship status.

Last Days of Leo

The last days of Leo and I thought my heart would break,

I’d love to run away from you if I could stay awake.

Please don’t ring the phone again, middle of the night

Apologies so secret, they’re at their best polite.

Even if I tell you it’s ok, you know it’s not.

We’re stuck in this together; fruits here will surely rot.

To see another summer, I know I have to go,

We can’t live together through another winter’s woe.

Deepak Chopra’s One Minute Shift

Now ask me how it feels to be one of 4,192 people @Deepak_Chopra follows on Twitter! FANTASTIC!

It all started with @Ciaobella50 & @Mountainkat. Bella was asking a question seemingly to God, joked MK, a question posed to Deepak Chopra on Twitter. She had barely formed a sentence when he answered her! She was shocked and amazed when she told me and I’m sure she’s blogging about it. I had to write this before reading her blog so I do not have a skewed view. She went on to tell me that he had DMd her! I was star struck! Not only by my beautiful friend, but by her attention from such a man! What an incredible turn of events!

Bella’s Twitter entries were simply hilarious, as usual, poking fun at herself, how she was “just sitting there having a conversation with Deepak Chopra”. He had advised her to be silent for 2 weeks. “2 weeks!” Bella marveled, “I can’t do that!” I suspect she could, but would miss her terribly! I am not sure whether Deepak meant for her to be silent in real life (irl) or online as in Twitter? Bella, not wanting to know, I suspect, did not ask for clarification. She continues to glow brighter than most! The truth is that all of my friends shine brighter than most whether they are on this list or not. Should they seek out Deepak, it would give him the opportunity to discover them. Perhaps some have followed my example and are following the fake Deepak Chopra. I will link only to the real Deepak because of this now.

A few of my friends @Deepak_Chopra follows on Twitter:

One Minute Shift is not to be missed! Please watch & RT!

Special thanks to @CiaoBella50 since I was following the fake Deepak Chopra previously! I am eternally grateful to my lovely friend!
